Can you can on a flat top stove?!

The answer…

Canning and preserving CAN be done on a flat top stove.

Safety First:

You do need to check YOUR users manual for exact recommendations for your stove because not all flattops are meant to can (like induction burners)

My stove is a work horse! And I don’t want to break the glass which is the biggest reason I was nervous about canning and was told a flat top shouldn’t be used to can products.

My users manual says yes! But that didn’t give me ALL the details I wanted.

What’s the maximum weight capacity? For my Whirlpool flat top stove the max weight with canner, goods and water is 50 pounds. Do your due diligence and reach out & ask your manufacturer

There is comfort in knowing that my stove is good to go for canning season.

So grab your jars (and forjarsusa lids, code FLOUR10) and let’s get preserving!

Misconception Two:

Another misconception is that the pressure cooker can be used to can low acid products.

Yes a pressure cooker pressurizes BUT not to the safe level you need to preserve low acid foods like meat, vegetables and broth.

A pressure cooker does not have the gauge or weight to build up pressure (and temperature) to a level you can control to appropriately can and process these low acid foods.

A pressure canner uses a weight or weighted gauge to enhance the safety of at home canning. These gauge and weight visually gives you feedback to know if you’re in a safe range to start your processing timer.

If you’d like to dive deeper into safe canning practices, I’ll meet you in the comments to answer your questions.
