Kitchen Aid Artisan

I owned a kitchen aid artisan for less than a week before I returned it. Here’s my honest thoughts. I was not making anything strenuous. No Rolls. No bread. No cookie dough. I was making butter mints for my brothers wedding and the artisan could not handle a simple mixture of butter, cream cheese and powdered sugar. I was left unimpressed by lack of power the artisan had. If you do any kind of baking in your home, I do not suggest or endorse the artisan. My personal experience is that it lacks the power to do anything.

However, there are other options to the artisan. I upgraded to the professional. And contrary to the name, it’s not necessarily for the “baking professional” or baker but really refers to the motor.

Kitchen Aid Mixer Pro’s

What we are really going to be comparing is the Kitchen Aid Professional. Kitchen Aid Professional is a a good all around mixer. Listed on Amazon for $499.95 (holiday sale price). Lets take a look at what the mixer can do:

  • Power: 13 dozen cookies per batch, knead over 8.5 lbs of bread, or mash over 7.5 lbs of potatoes
  • colors! If you love color and a statement piece, you’ll love the color options.
  • I do love the handle crank to lift the bowl. Just be sure to snap that bowl down.

Kitchen Aid Mixer Cons

Let’s get right into it:

  • Heavy! The mixer alone is a beast!
  • The lid: The flour /pour lid isn’t super helpful i make more messes using it than not and it doesnt provide a complete enclosure.
  • too many “names” hear me out: you have the classic, the artisan, the professional and the commercial. At least for me, I think Kitchen Aid and I think the professional but not all versions are created the same.
  • Cleaning: while the bowl cleans well, there’s just a whole lot more to clean from the bowl to mixing attachment to the base. It does take me longer to clean up.

Bosch Universal Mixer Pro’s

I really wasn’t sure what to expect with the Bosch Mixer. I heard people loved them but from the look I just wasnt sure. Well, looks are deceiving! The Bosch Mixer is a BEAST and WORKHORSE!!! AND it can handle delicate recipes like marshmallows and frosting. I just recently made whipped cream frosting and I have never had whipped cream done so fast. I think its because of the double whisks to improve efficiency.

Here are some more PRO’s

  • Lid: The lid can be in two parts. One to give a complete enclosure or two as a flour guard. My Kitchen Aid lid cannot do that
  • Power! The Bosch can handle 14 one pound loaves of bread at once and as little as 3 cups of flour. It can also mix 34 dozen cookies at once!!
  • Weight: Compared to the KA, This mixer is light weight!
  • Suction cups: something I wasn’t prepared for (AND LOVE) the base suction cups to the counter to help stabilize the unit.
  • COST! Retail the Bosch Universal Mixer comes in at $449! That is an insanely good price for a mixer of this caliber. (PS Keep reading for a discount code)
  • Cleanup: The bowls, the whisks, the dough hooks, everything is a breeze to clean up
  • Many optional accessories and attachments are available to purchase separately: blender, meat grinder, citrus juicer, food processor, slicer/shredder, pasta maker, and more.

Bosch Universal Mixer Cons:

For me, there aren’t a lot of cons. The Bosch Mixer I have has a plastic bowl. I really love a stainless bowl, but that is easily remedied by getting a stainless steel bowl or the black universal mixer.

This isn’t necessarily a con, but a learning point. Having used the Kitchen Aid for so long, I am just not used to having 4 speed settings. It is just a learning curve.

Color: its only available in White or Black. But that’s honestly fairly standard for most kitchen appliances and not a big deal for me.

Side by Side Comparison

Coming soon! I am going to do a sped up video on how quickly the bosch will mix whipped cream compared to that of the Kitchen Aid. This side by side comparison is now available and you can watch it here

I also think this graphic does a decent job breaking down the differences. Please be aware that in January 2025 the price of the Bosch Mixer will increase by $50. (This note added Dec 2024).

Where to Buy:

My Bosch Mixer came from Nutrimill. I have been so impressed by the company. I highly recommend buying directly from Nutrimill and when you do, add my code FLOURING to give you an extra $20 off (purchase HERE) and when Nutrimill runs their sales, they usually run insanely good sales(!!!), my code will usually stack to give you the best price.

If memory serves, my kitchen aid came from Costco, but you can find one similar to it at AMAZON. My kitchen aid is about 15 years old and has held up to the demands I’ve placed on it.

My Final Thoughts

Food for thought, Some people love the Ankarsrum Mixer. I have no experience with them. but those friends of mine who have them, love it BUT they are a hefty price.

For the price, the efficiency, the function, The Bosch is my overall pick!

Happy Baking!
